Endeavour - An adventure in writing in deep space

Welcome to this Time Capsule Education unit of English work. It has been specifically designed to fit in with Key Stage 2 English and can be used to develop a number of different genres. This unit is designed for Key Stage 2, but could easily be adapted for Key Stage 3 as well.

Endeavour is a story set in deep space, our main characters Elga and Dax travel to the Endeavour Space Station to see their parents, who are scientists on board. When they get to Endeavour the find that all the crew are missing and there appears to be no reason why. Join Elga and Dax in a variety of episodes and solve the mystery of the missing crew. Endeavour builds a Science Fiction Adventure as you move from activity to activity. The children are given a story start that introduces the main characters then they are given different events that might appear in their story. The children must make their way through the Docking Bay, Engineering, the Med Labs, Mess Deck, Bio-domes teeming with alien life forms and make their way to the bridge to mend the station computer. The end of the story is left deliberately open so they can decide what has happened to the children's parents.

This unit is designed to be combined with at least one day in school with the Time Capsule Team, where your children get to take part in a series of activities to help them explore the story setting further. This is often very helpful, especially with older children who sometimes feel that they are already too ‘grown up’ to take part or play.

An Endeavour day includes a session about What is Science Fiction?: We make Sci-Fi travel documents and Identity cards; We programme Big Trak roamers to help the children solve their first problem; we introduce the Space Station Endeavour and discuss what might happen in the different zones on board; we then move to the Docking Bay and the children must complete a series of challenges including make their way through the Laser Tunnel, and refuel the Station's Life Support System. A very busy day.

We do not aim to be so prescriptive that we will tell you exactly what and when to teach, this unit provides a guide to the genres you could cover, activities to fully engage your pupils in each genre, an over-arcing story that provides  an exciting immersive scenario so that your children will want to continue to explore the story world and to write the different episodes.

The Teacher's guide is available on this site , see the Download to the right. You will get the lessons and main teaching resources when you have booked a Time Capsule day, these come to you on a Time Capsule Pen Drive. You will then also gain access to the on-line resources we  provide that will further enhance the module with more background information. There are also suggestions for a number of cross-curricular activities and ways to extend your Science Fiction work into other areas of your children's learning.

This module, like all Time Capsule modules, is evolving all the time and we regularly update this module with new activities to add further experiences and value.

This unit is enhanced with on-line support for both pupils and staff. All the teaching resources and presentations are available on our website. There is further scenario related information available for the children so they can learn more about the setting of the story. They can also send and receive emails, and can take part in video conferences, to further the adventure, and to be given more challenges.
